Weekly Update

Dear Families of Room 23,

We had a wonderful field trip to the Marin Museum of the American Indian last week. The morning was full of valuable information that is helping us all make greater connections to the content we are learning in class. Hopefully your child shared some interesting facts and experiences from the field trip with you.

Please be sure to review and sign the Unit 1 Math Assessment, which will be in today’s green folder. Attached to the assessment is a letter from me with information suggesting how best to approach this with your third grader. Signed assessments should be returned to me by this Friday.

Tomorrow, Andrea Beaty, author of Iggy Peck Architect, Rosie Revere, and Ada Twist Scientist will visit our school. First through third grade students will have the pleasure of attending a session with her. We’re super excited to hear about her life as a writer and look forward to using her visit as inspiration for our own writing. Thank you to Mrs. Monge, our wonderful Librarian, for bringing this opportunity to Edna Maguire!

Regards,

Teresa Shern

Reading: We continue talking about boosting reading comprehension through following text clues, making high-level predictions, and retelling. Our Reader’s Workshop mentor text is Stone Fox, by John Reynolds Gardiner. We will continue our read aloud of Firefly Hollow, by Alison McGhee.

Writing: Students have narrowed down their topic choices for their small moment stories. Over the next several sessions of Writer’s Workshop, we will practice pre-writing using a variety of graphic organizers and then move through the writing process toward a polished piece. We also continue boosting our writing fluency – being able to keep pencil to paper for a sustained period of time. We continue to reach our goal of 10 minutes!

Note: Poetry began last week. We’re lucky to have six sessions in total. Thank you, Kiddo!

Social Studies: We are digging deeper, no pun intended, into the life of the Miwok Indians. Students are in study groups and are becoming experts on their chosen topics. Each student will write a paragraph about his/her topic and then create a Google Slide to present to the class. Topics include: food and plants, clothing, housing, hunting, tools, and music and games.

Math: We are underway with Unit 2 of our math program. This unit focuses on number stories, multistep number stories, exploring equal groups (arrays, multiplication, and division), and working with fraction circles, liquid volume, and area. Work within our multiplication books will continue.

Other Items: Cursive lessons will continue. Homework goes home on Monday and is due on Friday. Spelling and grammar continue. Students will be given time to study the week’s spelling words in class and will take a spelling test each Friday. Grammar is a small packet that will be given to students on Monday and due Friday (all work to be done in class with revisions as well).
