Weekly Update

Dear Families of Room 26,

Here are a couple of important notes regarding activities at our school over the next couple of weeks.

1.     The Garden Faire is this Sunday from 11:00-3:00. Thank you to our PTA for organizing this wonderful event.

2.     Next Thursday, May 2, is Kiddo! Donation Day and we will be wearing our red, black, and/or yellow to represent KIDDO! Thanks to financial support from KIDDO!, all  third grade children have PE, Art, Chorus, Music, Poetry, a Library aide, and classroom aides. As teachers, we are grateful beyond words for your support of KIDDO!  Please donate to Kiddo! to the extent possible for your family on Donation Day so we can offer your kids the same great education next year.  Thanks in advance for your participation!

3.     The Edna Maguire Mustang Maker Night is Wednesday, May 15 from 5:00-8:00 in the multipurpose room. Thank you to our PTA for bringing this opportunity to our students!

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Regards,

Teresa Shern

What We’re Working On:

·       Mill Valley Then and Now History Project: Students have chosen topics and are in the process of researching the “Then and Now” of their topics. Our end product will be to write paragraphs based on our research. We’ll also make a Google Slide presentation and students will present their information to the class. We’re excited to showcase our work at Open House!

·       Reading Comprehension: Using high interest non-fiction articles to practice finding main ideas and answering key questions.

·       Writing: We continue to write opinion paragraphs and will soon begin writing persuasive pieces. We are also writing our Mill Valley History paragraphs.

·       Math: Our work with fractions will continue, including fractions on a number line between 0 and 1 as well as mixed numbers between 1 and 2, understanding fractions as numbers, and using fractions in number stories. We are also building our understanding of liquid volume measurements. Our work with elapsed time and telling time to the nearest minute continues. Students should continue to memorize and practice their multiplication facts so that they become automatic.

·       Science: We are currently in our Forces and Motion unit. Last week we learned about the forces of pushing and pulling (tug-of-war and an exploding watermelon!). We also examined how bridges are built. Students built paper bridges with only two pieces of paper and then tested the bridges with pennies. Students reengineered their bridges several times to see how many pennies they could hold. Try it at home! This week, we’ll explore slides and how the forces of gravity and friction work together to affect the speed at which we go down a slide.

·       Read Aloud: The Wild Robot, by Peter Brown

·       Other Items: cursive, grammar, and spelling continue.
